FUNERALS & MEMORIAL SERVICES

Funeral and Memorial Services at St. David’s

We are deeply sorry if you or a loved one has experienced the loss of someone you love. If you are interested in planning for a funeral or memorial service at St. David’s please contact the parish office at (202) 966-2093 and a clergy person from St. David’s will be in touch with you as soon as possible. The information below will help you decide if St.David’s is the right place for a service honoring the one you love.

The liturgy for the dead is an Easter liturgy. It finds all meaning in the resurrection. Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we too, shall be raised. The liturgy, therefore, is characterized by joy. This joy, however, does not make human grief unchristian. The very love we have for each other in Christ brings deep sorrow when we are parted by death. In the Liturgy for the dead, we sorrow in sympathy with those who mourn as we rejoice in our faith in the resurrection to eternal life.

We call the liturgy for the dead a funeral when either a casket or an urn is present. We call it a memorial service when there is no body present. Both services are open to non-members of the church. All services are conducted according to The Book of Common Prayer and often include scripture readings, hymns, a homily, prayers for the departed, and a commendation. It is best to make arrangements for a funeral or a memorial service with a member of St. David’s clergy as soon as the death occurs.

This form will assist you in the planning of a funeral or memorial service at St. David’s.

The Columbarium at St. David’s

St. David’s Episcopal Church offers a serene and sacred Columbarium—a final resting place for the ashes of loved ones within the embrace of our church community. Nestled in a peaceful garden setting, the Columbarium serves as a space for remembrance, reflection, and prayer. It is available to parishioners and their families who wish to have their ashes interred on church grounds, in a place marked by grace and continuity.
